Adams expresses serious concern over McDowell's citizenship announcement

10 March, 2004

Speaking following the Minister for Justices' announcement of a referendum on Citizenship Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams expressed his concern at the implications the announcement has for aspects of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr. Adams said, "I am seriously concerned by the latest announcement by the Minister for Justice Michael McDowell and the implications it has for aspects of the Good Friday Agreement. One of the most positive aspects to the Good Friday Agreement was the guarantee of the right to citizenship that is accorded to all people born on the island of Ireland north and south, irrespective of their ethnicity or religious background. As Irish republicans and democrats we never have and will never accept any notion or proposals that legislate for two-tier or second-class citizenship. We will fight to have that right maintained."
