Mandela Release Anniversary

11 February, 2010 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has said that the release of Nelson Mandela twenty years ago today was a pivotal moment in defining the modern world.   Ms de Brun stated,

“The release of Nelson Mandela from prison 20 years ago today having been incarcerated for 27 years was one of the major events that changed the way people looked upon global politics.

“For Irish republicans the release of Nelson Mandela was particularly significant in that it gave hope to the fledgling peace process at that time.  The South African experience of conflict transformation continued to inspire us in the years following Nelson Mandela's release especially at difficult junctures of our own process.

“The change that Nelson Mandela managed in South Africa to move from an apartheid system into a nation supported by all cultures within that country in such a short time was a remarkable feat and an inspiration to the world.

“Nelson Mandela’s humanity, humility and political ability have encouraged many people to develop peace processes in trouble spots across the globe and it is fitting that the event of his release is celebrated worldwide."
