Money needed to kick-start West Belfast Housing Strategy

11 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Fra McCann has said that the Department of Social Development needs to release money to kick-start the West Belfast Housing Strategy.

Mr McCann said:

"Last year the Housing Executive unveiled the Greater West Belfast Housing Strategy.

"West Belfast is the most disadvantaged constituency in the six countries (8 out of 13 wards are in the 10% most deprived in the six) and West Belfast has some of the highest waiting lists in the six counties.

"While there is ongoing need to address housing conditions to maintain the quality of stock. Sinn Fein is concerned that there is a huge level of housing stress (i.e. homelessness) and families living in inadequate or overcrowded accommodation.

"The Housing Executive strategy identifies the need for 4090 housing units of which 1920 units should be social housing. The cost of this is in excess of £200 million.

"The Housing Strategy made a promise to the people of West Belfast. It is time that the Housing Executive and the Department to followed through.

"We need the department of Social development to release the monies to complete land acquisitions at the Hannahstown and St. Pats sights.

"We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the minister on this matter.ENDS
