Doherty to travel to Galway Gaeltacht with Oireachtas delegation

17 February, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

He said:

“I am delighted to be a part of this delegation which will have the opportunity to listen to the views of over 27 different Gaeltacht groups in relation to the draft 20 year strategy on the Irish language.

“Seven groups from the Donegal Gaeltacht will be represented. They are Guth na Gaeltachta, Comharchumainn Gaoth Dobhair, Toraí and Árainn, Coiste na Mná Tí, Gaeltacht Bheo Fhánaide and Oideas Gael.

“This is a unique opportunity for these groups to present their vision for the future of the Irish language on this island and I look forward to hearing their submissions.

“The linguistic study on the use of Irish in the Gaeltacht stated that unless drastic action was taken the spoken language would not last another 20 years. This draft 20 year strategy is an opportunity to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“While I do welcome the strategy, I believe that it does not go far enough as to adequately cater for the needs of Gaeltacht communities. Good work has been done but it is important that we build on this draft strategy to ensure that Gaeltacht communities are enabled to play a central role in the preservation of the Irish language.

“I hope that this consultation session with groups representing Gaeltacht communities will serve to inform the committee as to the way forward in terms of preserving the language both inside and outside the Gaeltacht.” ENDS
