Minister claims credit for Chilcott jobs yet no responsibility for job losses - Morgan

24 February, 2010

Morgan said:

“The announcement that 200 new jobs are being brought to Dundalk will offer some relief to some of the 17,112 on the Live Register in County Louth.

“However, 200 jobs is only a drop in the ocean when you consider that there are so many people unemployed in County Louth and that in 2009 alone 1,160 jobs were lost in Enterprise Agency assisted firms in the county. The Government are failing to retain employment and compensate for job losses; they are willing to take the credit for any job creation in the State but are not willing to take responsibility for the massive job losses and the hundreds of thousands of people on the Live Register.

“The Minister has a brass neck for coming to announce the creation of these new jobs today in Dundalk given the record of Dermot Ahern, who was available for a photo opportunity when the Halifax call centre was opened up, yet refused to meet the 130 workers when the closure of the call-centre was announced.” ENDS
