Trimble attack on Sinn Féin cynical

13 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Chairperson Mitchel McLaughlin MLA accused UUP leader David Trimble of complete cynicism in his attack on the party last night. Mr. Maskey said "As Mr. Trimble well knows, there are no links between Sinn Féin and ETA, but for many years we have met with parties, trade unions and church groups in the Basque Country to share with them our experience of conflict resolution."

Mr. McLaughlin said:

"It is deeply regrettable that Mr. Trimble has chosen to act in such a cynical manner following what is an appalling tragedy. As he is fully aware there are no links between Sinn Féin and ETA, but for many years we have met with parties, trade unions and church groups in the Basque Country to share with them our experience of conflict resolution. The message that we brought there was the need for a peace process based on equality and inclusion.

"Just as we learned much from the South African experience of conflict resolution, we take seriously our responsibility to share our experience in the hope that it might help others."ENDS
