Government must act on use of Irish passports in Dubai killing — McDonald

28 February, 2010

SINN FÉIN Vice President Mary Lou McDonald has called on the Irish Government to pursue with increased vigour the use of Irish passports in the murder of a member of the Palestinian organization Hamas in Dubai last month, allegedly by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.

Mary Lou McDonald said:

“The use of Irish passports by foreign intelligence agencies to carry out the assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai is an extremely serious issue.

“That this killing was carried out on the territory of a sovereign state, Dubai,is in itself an insult to international law, but the fact that Irish passports were used amounts to an attack on Irish sovereignty and neutrality and has placed Irish citizens in danger.

“It is imperative that the Irish Government pursues this case with increased vigour. I have to say it appears to me that they have done the bare minimum up to this point.

“The Irish Government must first of all do all in its power to ascertain who was behind the killing and the misuse of Irish passports. If this requires sending Gardai to Dubai to investigate this issue then that should be done.

“If, as most informed observers already believe, the Israeli state was behind this killing and the abuse of Irish passports, the Irish Government has no option but to view such activity as the act of a hostile state and take all appropriate diplomatic action in response.”
