Holyland area needs strategic approach – Maskey

11 March, 2010 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin MLA for south Belfast Alex Maskey has said that “CCTV in the Holyland will only solve the symptoms of the problems faced by that community but cant resolve the core issues faced by the community”.

Speaking from the area this morning Cllr Maskey said;

“I welcome any move to help create a safer environment for all the residents who live in the Holyland.

I have no doubt that many residents who are plagued by anti-social behaviour will welcome any move to make their area safer in the immediate time ahead, however, all the feedback has indicated that people want and need more fundamental, more imaginative and longer term thinking to resolve the core problems faced by Holyland residents.

The latest initiative must be part of a broader and much more strategic approach to the area, from an Executive level down; that is why Sinn Fein recently launched our Holyland vision document, outlining our postition that the Holyland needs to be designated an ‘area at risk’ by the DSD and for a lead Minister to implement urgent changes in the area.” CRÍOCH
