Republicans to commemorate Easter Rising across Ireland this weekend

1 April, 2010

Republicans from across Ireland will gather at commemorations throughout the country this weekend to mark the 94th anniversary of the 1916 Rising and to commemorate all those who have given their lives in pursuit of Irish Freedom.

Encouraging Republicans to take part in local as well as national commemorative events, deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA said;

“Easter is the most important date in the Republican calendar, a time when we not only gather to remember those who have died in pursuit of Irish Freedom and Liberty and to stand in continued solidarity with their families, but also a time when we recommit ourselves to the pursuance of our Republican objectives.

I would encourage people to take part in their local events but also to come along with the family to be part of the national events that will take place over the weekend.”

Speaking about the importance of wearing the Easter Lily Mr McGuinness said;

“The Easter Lily is the symbol we Irish use to honour our patriot dead; last week we launched this years lily campaign in Stormont. I would call on people to support the work of the National Graves Association and to purchase a lily and honour Ireland’s dead by wearing it proudly this weekend.” CRÍOCH
