Recruitment ban on Probation Service puts my community in danger – Ó Snodaigh

28 April, 2010 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

This morning Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh revealed shocking cuts to the numbers of probation officers and community service supervisors at a time when serious crime is rising throughout Dublin and in his own constituency in particular. Figures obtained by the Sinn Féin TD show that the recruitment ban imposed by the government has directly resulted in the loss of 21 Probation Officers and Community Service Supervisors.

Ó Snodaigh said:

“The staffing figures I have obtained present a harrowing vista for the safety of my community. The discovery of two shotguns, ammunition and balaclavas in Bushy Park and another firearm in Decies Rd., Ballyfermot is further evidence that the government policy of cutting probation services and resources for Gardaí is leaving communities at risk. Unfortunately this government are reactive and only seem to act when personal tragedy strikes. Cuts to any area of crime prevention are absolutely unnacceptable and counterproductive.”
