Sinn Féin campaign an all-Ireland effort

Sinn Féin activists and representatives from across the island have been playing a full part in the party’s Westminster election campaign. TDs Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, Martin Ferris and Arthur Morgan as well as Senator Pearse Doherty have all been canvassing in the North in recent days.

Speaking as he prepared to spend the weekend in his neighbouring counties of Fermanagh and Tyrone where he is canvassing on behalf of his colleague, the North’s Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew, Sinn Fein Dáil leader  and Cavan/Monaghan TD Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin said:

“In Fermanagh/South Tyrone the Orange Order has worked behind the scenes to advance a political agenda to take the Westminster seat away from the voters who elected a Sinn Féin MP.

“The Fermanagh/South Tyrone seat is very symbolic for republicans throughout the length and breadth of Ireland. It is the seat won by Bobby Sands in 1981 when he was on Hunger Strike in Long Kesh. It is the seat subsequently won by Owen Carron and it is the seat won by Michelle Gildernew.

“The effort, at the behest of the Orange Order, to replace a republican woman Minister with a Tory, is all about turning back the clock on the political progress that has been made in recent years. Republicans from across Ireland are determined to play their part in ensuring that this does not succeed.”

Senator Pearse Doherty will also be canvassing in Fermanagh/South Tyrone today and Friday.

Meanwhile, also speaking today as he prepared to canvass in the South Down constituency on behalf of Education Minister Caitríona Ruane, Louth TD Arthur Morgan said:

“This election is an important one, not just in terms of the North itself, but for the peace process and the future development of politics on this island.

“As the only all Ireland party in this election Sinn Féin has elected representatives in every forum on this island. People vote for Sinn Féin from Cork to Derry, and from Kerry to Down.

“Our election campaign is a truly national effort. I have had the pleasure in recent days of canvassing my neighbours in South Down on behalf of Caitriona Ruane and the response to Sinn Féin’s efforts in the Executive and in the Peace Process has been very positive. I look forward to going back into the constituency today.”
