Prison overcrowding deplorable – Ó Snodaigh
This morning Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh and Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Justice expressed his outrage at the chronic overcrowding in the prison system w hich was condemned last night by the president of the Prison Officers Association.
Ó Snodaigh said:
“Tragically, I am not in the least bit surprised at the POA’s condemnation and I absolutely share their frustration and anger at the deplorable situation our prisons are in.
Only yesterday I publicised the cuts to the number of probation officers and community service supervisors resulting from the government's ban on recruitment. Such cuts are beyond irresponsible at a time when serious crime is rising throughout Dublin and in my own constituency in particular.
I have expressed my feelings and outright fury on this issue consistently. The moratoriam on recruitment is reducing the capacity of the Probation Service to monitor offenders post-release and to supervise community service orders, which subsequently compounds the overcrowding problem in our prisons. This is an inevitable knock on effect.”
