Ó Snodaigh pushes for Headshop Bill to be fast tracked
Speaking early this morning in response to the government’s intention to create a Bill designed to tackle Head shops, Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Justice Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD welcomed the move saying now that steps are finally being taken towards the introduction of legislation by government it ‘must be fast tracked with no further delay’.
“I welcome the Minister’s movement on the issue. Unfortunately it has taken the government four years of long promised action to get us to this point. Why it has taken this length of time beggars belief. Had the ball started rolling several years ago, many of my constituents could have been better protected from these substances. In my constituency alone there are four Head shops. There has been too much delay, which is why I am urging all parties to push for legislation to be fast tracked.
“I published my Non-medicinal Psychoactive Substances Bill last week in order to kick-start some action by government and so to that extent I welcome the announcement that Cabinet are to consider the issue. I gave my Bill to the government to adopt as their own and I hope to see some of its contents reflected in their bill.
“Let us not forget ,however, new legal highs are being invented at a rate of two every month so I hope the government will take an anticipatory approach this time with that in mind.”
