Molloy searches out alternatives to incineration

24 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy will investigate alternatives to incineration as part of a delegation of the Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWaMP) next week. The delegation will visit two projects in Bristol and one in Southampton next week leaving on Monday 29th March.

Speaking ahead of the visits Mr Molloy said:

"Waste management has been identified as a significant area of concern within the European Union. This has led to the adoption of a range of policy and legislative measures particularly at a European level, which are set to transform waste management practices radically in the coming years.

"It is vital that we begin to look at and develop practical alternatives to incineration.

"There are also significant problems with any long term reliance on landfill. Neither landfill nor incineration will provide safe, environmentally friendly long-term solutions.

"As the current problems around illegal dumping show that we need to urgently find long term solutions to waste management and that such solutions will only be effective if they are developed within an all Ireland context." ENDS
