Proposal for school transport fees a mockery to the notion of free education – Doherty

24 May, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Senator Pearse Doherty has said a proposal to charge a €500 annual fee for school transport makes a mockery of the notion of free education in Ireland.

Senator Doherty described the proposal to introduce a €500 annual fee for primary school children and increase the current fee for secondary students from €300 to €500 annually as an insult added to the injury of overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated schools.

Speaking today Senator Doherty said:

“Any parent with school going children will be aware that free education in Ireland is only a myth. However, the proposal to introduce a €500 charge for school transport makes a mockery of any notion of free education in this country.

“This proposal is an insult added to the injury of overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated schools.

“How could the Government possibly justify such an extortionate charge for children to travel to substandard and understaffed facilities.

“This proposal must be opposed.” ENDS
