Sinn Féin welcomes Airtricity entry into North’s Electricity Market

25 May, 2010

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has welcomed the announcement of Airtricity's entry into the North’s electricity Market.

Mr. McLaughlin said:

“The arrival of a new energy supplier to the market is a welcome development. Airtricity will offer competition to existing suppliers and should lead to reduced energy costs for consumers.

"While I welcome Airtricity’s announcement I have concerns about some of the conditions which apply and will exclude some consumers from immediate choice. The fact that Airtricity will not be able to supply electricity to the thousands of keypad meter customers, plus the fact that a £300 security deposit will be required from non-direct debit customers will mean that those most in need of cheaper electricity will not be able to access the special reduction in cost being offered by Airtricity.

“I would urge the Utility Regulator to work with Airtricity to find resolutions to these restrictions as soon as possible.
