Minister O’Cuiv must stand up for victims of domestic violence - McDonald

25 May, 2010

Speaking today, as new guidelines for dealing with cases of domestic violence were published by the HSE, Sinn Féin vice-president Mary-Lou McDonald has called on Minister O’Cuiv to stand up for women who are being abused and to make appropriate funding available to women’s refuges in order to ensure the safety of women and their families.

The Sinn Féin vice-president said:
“These new guidelines for dealing with domestic abuse have come at a time when support for women experiencing abuse in the home is at an all time low. Community facilities and in particular women’s refuges have been drastically cut back and getting women to safety where situations of abuse arise is extremely difficult.

“It is well documented that in times of recession instances of domestic violence against women increase dramatically. That is why domestic violence services aimed at protecting vulnerable women and their families should be made an absolute priority for the new Minister for Social Protection Eamonn O’Cuiv.

“I am calling on Minister O’Cuiv to stand up for women who are being abused and to make appropriate funding available to women’s refuges in order to ensure the safety of women and their families."
