There must be accountability for Dublin Docklands mess – McDonald

27 May, 2010

Sinn Féin Vice President and representative for Dublin Central Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed news that the Comptroller and Auditor General is to investigate the financial losses at the Dublin Docklands Development Authority.

Speaking after three reports were published yesterday confirming serious failings at the DDDA Ms. McDonald said:

“The whole mess at the Dublin Docklands Development Authority is the result of years of Fianna Fáil style chronyism and corruption. The Irish taxpayer has been landed with a further bill amounting to tens of millions of euros as a result of the greed of property speculators and developers and a political establishment which facilitated them.

“Those who are up to their necks in this mess should be ashamed of themselves for turning something which was supposed to benefit the ordinary people of the inner city into a mechanism to further line the pockets of speculators and developers.

“I welcome the fact that the Comptroller and Auditor General is to further investigate the goings on at the Dublin Docklands Development Authority.

“Ultimately there needs to be accountability for this whole mess. The Irish public and the people of Dublin’s inner city in particular will accept nothing less.” ENDS
