Maskey outraged by closure of Andersonstown Library

27 May, 2010

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Paul Maskey has reacted angrily to the announcement that a decision has been taken to close Andersonstown Library and that a number of other libraries throughout the Belfast area are set to close following a decision by Libraires NI today.

Speaking today Mr Maskey said:

“The decision to close the Andersonstown library and several other libraries was taken today, and announced, by the board of Libraries NI.

“I recently took part in the consultation surrounding the future of the Andersonstown libraries and meet with the board. I can say that we put a very strong case as to why the library should remain open as it provides a vital service to the local community, including the elderly, schools and those who do not have easy access to resources such as the internet.

“I can also say I was not the only one making this case.

“I am extremely disappointed about the nature of this announcement, with those involved in the consultation process not being informed of any possible decisions beforehand. I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Irene Knox, the Chief Executive of board in order to press once again why these libraries should not be taken away from the community.“
