Fianna Fáil vote for extra weeks holiday in the Seanad - Doherty

3 June, 2010

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has today slammed the Fianna Fáil Senators who voted to give themselves an extra week off after the bank holiday. Senator Doherty said that in the week that the live register jumped by another 6,600 people signing on such a move by the government senators is nothing short of a scandal.

Speaking after he called the vote opposing this holiday Senator Doherty said:

“The Fianna Fáil Senators who voted to give themselves an extra weeks holiday after the Bank Holiday weekend have some neck. In a week where the live register has jumped by a further 6,600 and regional figures are due to be released tomorrow, their action here today is nothing short of a scandal.

“These are the same politicians who not only are willing to blame ordinary people for the economic mess they have created, but who also claim extravagant expenses for themselves in the process.

“I called the vote opposing this holiday because I was unwilling to let this slip by. The Senators are paid by working people’s taxes and should not be voting to give themselves week-long breaks whenever they feel like it.
