Leonard calls on McAusland to bring language strategy before committee ahead of recess
Sinn Féin Culture Arts and Leisure Committee member Billy Leonard has called on Culture Minister Nelson McAusland to appear before the culture committee before the Assembly breaks for summer recess to explain the delay in bringing forward a languages strategy for the north.
Mr Leonard said;
“Following yesterday’s DCAL committee meeting I am calling on the Minister for Culture Arts and Leisure to urgently appear before the scrutiny committee and explain to us his further delay in bringing forward a languages strategy for the north.
Nelson McAusland was due to brief the Assembly committee yesterday on a draft strategy and pulled out. In addition his officials have indicated that an Irish language strategy may not now be produced until September - a full six months late.
There is every suspicion that the Minister will continue to stall on this Ministerial responsibility.
All languages deserve respect and all language communities should have access to services. The DCAL Minister has a particular responsibility in this respect which he is failing to deliver on.” CRÍOCH
