Rachel Corrie must be provided safe passage - McCartney

4 June, 2010 - by Raymond McCartney

Sinn Féin MLA and International spokesperson, Raymond McCartney has stated that the aid ship Rachel Corrie must be allowed safe passage to deliver 1,000 tonnes of much needed aid to the people of Gaza.

Speaking following today’s debate in the Assembly Mr McCartney said:

“The Rachel Corrie is an aid ship carrying much needed supplies to Gaza. It is on a humanitarian mission and its safe passage must be guaranteed.

“There are legitimate fears following the actions by the Israeli government and their military forces earlier this week that this ship will be intercepted. The main fear is in what way this will occur following the shooting dead of aid-workers on another ship earlier this week by the Israeli forces.

“Sinn Féin will continue to place pressure wherever we can to see that the blockade on Gaza is lifted. Only this week we have pressed the Irish government to expel the Israeli Ambassador.

“We are sending a strong message from here today, adding our voices to hundreds of thousands around the world, that many within this Assembly oppose the illegal blockade of Gaza by Israel and the manner in which it imposes this blockade.

“It is unfortunate however that the unionist parties have attempted to block this motion. In doing so they support the deprivation of school children, the lack of sanitation, the reconstruction of hospitals and the denial of basic services and aid to 1.5million people held within the illegal walls of Gaza.”
