Cowen and Fianna Fáil ignored all warnings and deserve no confidence – Ó Caoláin

11 June, 2010 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has said that, as Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen ignored all warnings about the damage being done by the property bubble and as Taoiseach he is making the people pay for Fianna Fáil’s disastrous policies. Ó Caoláin urged people to tell Fianna Fáil TDs this weekend that they have no confidence in the Government and to vote accordingly in the Dáil next week.

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:

“Taoiseach Brian Cowen is making pathetic efforts to wriggle out of responsibility for the economic collapse which is now fully exposed for what it is – a direct consequence of Government policy.

“As Finance Minister Brian Cowen deliberately ignored warnings from many sources, including Sinn Féin, that the property bubble was hugely damaging and that basing public finances on it was a recipe for disaster. Minister Cowen and Taoiseach Ahern treated with contempt our calls for no tax cuts for the wealthy, for a fairer tax system, for housing policy based on housing need and not on the grossly inflated market.

“Now as Taoiseach, Brian Cowen is making the people pay for Fianna Fáil’s disastrous policies. Confidence in a Government in this State was never lower. I would urge people to go to the Fianna Fáil TDs in their constituencies this weekend and tell them they have no confidence in the Government and demand that they vote accordingly in the Dáil next week.” ENDS
