Irish boxers do us proud in Moscow – Adams

13 June, 2010 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin President and west Belfast MP Gerry Adams has congratulated those from the Irish Boxing Team who won medals at the European Championships taking place in Moscow. He paid a particular tribute to north Belfast Boxer and Olympic Bronze medallist Paddy Barnes on his magnificent achievement at being crowned champion of Europe.

Mr Adams said;

“This was a wonderful achievement for Irish boxing.

Paddy Barnes struck gold and is now the champion of Europe, the spirit of Belfast boxing is alive and well in Paddy and I want to congratulate him and wish him all the best in his success and in the time ahead.

Darren O’Neil’s achievement in reaching Silver is to be commended and a special mention to Ken Egan, Eric Donovan and Tyrone McCullough on winning Bronze at the championships.

This is the first time in 19 years that Ireland has had a European boxing champion, and the overall medal tally places Ireland second on the medals table.

I want to congratulate the team again on their success and look forward to continued achievement for Ireland in the time ahead.” CRÍOCH
