Government’s failure to protect mentally ill exposed – Ó Snodaigh
Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh called on the Government to take immediate emergency action to relocate mentally ill patients out of three hospitals which have been deemed unfit for human habitation by the Mental Health Commission.
“There is an abject failure of the Government to protect the rights and dignity of the mentally ill as evidenced by the Commission’s finding. This is further evidenced by a disturbing incident yesterday where a homeless mentally ill woman attempted to rescale the wall of Mountjoy prison having been forcibly released from the prison because she had nowhere to go.”
“Admissions are to cease next February and this is totally unacceptable. The Government must designate a working group to take emergency action to suspend admissions as soon as is feasibly possible and to ensure the urgent relocation of existing patients.”
