Ferris calls for reinstatement of sacked workers
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Workers Rights Martin Ferris TD has called on Connolly Shoes to reinstate four workers who have been sacked from their jobs at the firm’s Dun Laoighaire outlet. Two workers were originally sacked for refusing to sign up to arbitrary changes in their terms of employment.
Two workers who have been on strike in support of their fellow workers for three months were sacked on June 3. The company has refused to attend the LRC or to accept offers of mediation.
Deputy Ferris said: “The manner in which Connolly Shoes has treated its workers, all of them with long years of employment, is disgraceful. The four were all acting reasonably and two were on an official strike so the company had no right to dismiss them in blatant disregard for accepted procedures. The company is also displaying its arrogance in refusing to attend the Labour relations Commission.
“If employment legislation is worth anything, the Minister responsible must act to ensure that the employer in this case complies with the law and the spirit of the law, and that it reinstates the sacked workers pending an LRC hearing.” ENDS
