IBEC Dinner at the Mansion House an insult to members of An Céad Dáil Éireann – Ó Snodaigh

23 June, 2010 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

Speaking at the Right to Work protest outside the Mansion House this evening where An Taoiseach Brian Cowen is attending the annual IBEC dinner Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh said the €1,200+ meal is an insult to the members of An Céad Dáil Éireann who first met in the Mansion House.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

“Like the Galway tent this dinner is about fostering close links with big business, ensuring that they get the biggest share of a reducing pot, while small businesses are left high and dry.

“Many of the people at this dinner are the very people who are calling for a reduction in the minimum wage, they are the very ones who did very well in the Celtic Tiger era.

“This is a €1,200+ a meal, while young people are being condemned to the emigration boat and those under 21 and unemployed have to live on €100 a week. One meal for big business is another person's three months sustenance payment.

“I don't think you will hear Brian Cowen or his pals at the dinner table demanding that the colleagues pay up the €29 million they owe local authorities in water charges. Yet they would expect householders to agree to the introduction of domestic charges.

“These are the cheerleaders of PD/FF economic policies which got us into the crisis we are faced with now and they are outside historic building where Céad Dáil met. What an insult to those men and women this dinner is.” ENDS
