Elderly Care provision slashed without warning

30 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson, Upper Bann MLA John O Dowd has accused Craigavon & Banbridge Community Health Trust of displaying an uncaring arrogance towards the elderly after they slashed care provision to the elderly without warning.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"I know of one Portadown lady who at 90 years of age relied on her 40 minute daily visit from her Care Assistant. This is possibly the only person she sees may see on any given day.

"The Trusts have slashed her Care Assistants time to 20 minutes, entirely without any written or verbal warning. The Trust have since told the elderly lady to take meals on wheels as the Care Assistant will not be providing them and bluntly that if she does not want this she can do her own cooking.

"This is the story being repeated throughout the Portadown area. The Trust now will not answer my phone calls, and will not explain to staff why this is happening. More seriously the Craigavon & Banbridge Community Health Trust have left some of the most vulnerable in our society in a distressed condition.

"I now call on the Trust publicly to state why these cuts have been introduced and why they were introduced with no warning and in such an uncaring and arrogant manner."ENDS
