Doherty condemns college job losses
Sinn Fein spokesperson on Education, Senator Pearse Doherty, has hit out against reports that state that more than 1,100 jobs in colleges will be lost by the end of the year due to Government cuts.
Senator Doherty said “While Government Ministers travel the world at tax payer’s expense boasting about how much importance is placed on the education system in Ireland, the reality is completely different. Student-staff ratios were already more than double those in comparable EU universities and these job losses will make a bad situation worse.
“This government has failed to provide school leavers with any hope of employment and they now seem bent on damaging any hopes they may have had for a top class third level education. Any cuts imposed by this government which have an adverse effect on education standards will cause immediate and long term harm to the Irish economy and should be rescinded now. ENDS
