Minister McCreevy should resign over Punchestown

30 March, 2004

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called for the resignation of the Minister for Finance over the Punchestown Event Centre debacle.

Commenting on the report of the Public Accounts Committee, Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

"Minister McCreevy signed off on this deal which is a pet project in his own constituency. The cost of the project was allowed to inflate without any proper evaluation and the Minister gave his approval regardless. He squandered €15 million of public money for no public good.

"Minister McCreevy should resign because of his gross mismanagement of public funds and because of the warped priorities that this project represents. This is a Government that refuses to reverse miserly cuts in welfare benefits for widows and changes the terms of the Rent Allowance scheme that are causing real hardship, yet it has staunchly defended the Punchestown debacle.

Minister McCreevy demonstrates a keen interest in horses but shows no corresponding interest in the affairs of the least well off and marginalized of our people. He should go now." ENDS
