Cowen challenged to visit Donegal South West

23 July, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has called on An Taoiseach Brian Cowen to travel to Donegal South West to explain to the people there why he is opposing moves to hold a by-election there to fill the vacant Dáil seat.

Senator Doherty has taken a case against the Government in the High Court challenging the failure to hold the by-election. The case will be heard next Thursday 29th July.

Speaking today Senator Doherty said:

“If the Government are intent on defending this case then the Taoiseach should travel to Donegal South West and explain directly to the people there why he is opposing their right to equal representation.

“It is more than a year now since the vacancy arose and it is a disgrace that I have had to go to court simply to try and force this by-election to take place.” ENDS
