Doherty welcomes report on twenty year strategy for Irish language
Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has welcomed the publication of report from the Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Committee on a twenty year strategy for the Irish language.
Senator Doherty, who is a member of the sub-committee that dealt with this strategy and proposed many of the recommendations contained within the report called on Government to accept the report in its entirety and adopt its recommendations as part of their own draft strategy.
Speaking today he said:
“I welcome today’s report from the Oireachtas Committee on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and I call on the Government to accept the report in its entirety and adopt its recommendations as part of their own draft strategy.
“The twenty year strategy for the Irish language gives us a huge opportunity to ensure that the language continues to survive and to thrive for future generations. However there are serious weaknesses in the Government’s draft strategy.
“Today’s report seeks to address those weaknesses and if the Government adopts these recommendations into their draft strategy I believe we will have a strategy that all political parties and community groups can support and buy into.
“If the Government ignores the views of the committee and the community groups who helped form these views then this will be a lost opportunity. We must not let that happen.” ENDS
