Sinn Féin welcome Ross Street flats demolition

28 July, 2010 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Fra McCann has welcomed the decision by Social Development Minister, Alex Atwood to announce the demolishment of the Ross Street flats stating that the decision has come about through a strong and concerted campaign by local residents following the murder of Frank McGreevy

Speaking today Mr McCann said:

“The announcement by the Social Development Minister to demolish the Ross Street flats is the right decision and long overdue.

“I would like to congratulate the local residents who led a strong and concerted campaign to see this happen and they can be proud today that they were successful in their efforts.

“These flats have been a blight on this community being used night after night for anti-social activity. Local residents, both within the flats and in the surrounding neighbourhood, were tortured and tragically, local man, Frank McGreevy, was murdered in the flats.

“I welcome the change of heart from the Minister given his predecessors solid opposition to follow through with such an move. I will now be seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister, Alex Attwood, as soon as possible to discuss the redevelopment process for Ross Street.”
