Gildernew welcomes Flooding Taskforce Report Publication
Speaking today at the Fermanagh County Show, Sinn Féin MP for Fermanagh South Tyrone and Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Michelle Gildernew welcomed the long awaited publishing of the Flooding Taskforce Report by the Office of the First and the deputy First Minister.
Michelle Gildernew said:
"During last winter, many parts of Fermanagh were completely covered in the worst floods in living memory. As a result of this, The Flooding Taskforce was set up to investigate the factors, which contributed to the flooding and to consider how departments could assist in dealing with the aftermath.
"Following on from this, four ministers from the Executive heard first hand from many of the people affected by the floods. Using that information, we brought a report to the Executive for approval, which I can now confirm has been approved and a detail scheme of works has been passed onto the relevant statutory agencies to immediately begin work.
"Although the publishing of the report has been delayed much longer than I would have hoped, having spoken to the Divisional Roads Manager Pat Doherty, and sought assurances from the Minister for Regional Development, Conor Murphy, I am confident that this work will be completed as soon as possible and much of it before we enter the winter months, when flooding is most likely to affect Fermanagh.
"A recent media report focused on the cost of the work carried out, but I feel it is much better to focus on the extensive scheme of works that has been scheduled. There is a huge amount of work going to place over the next number of months and I am glad that work can begin on this shortly, which will result in Fermanagh being better able to deal with a sustained period of heavy rainfall."
