Ó Snodaigh welcomes Smithfield heroin seizure
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson and Dublin South Central TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has welcomed the seizure of nearly half a million Euro’s of heroin in Smithfield.
Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said the scale of the seizure is a reflection of the scale of the drugs crisis in Ireland and called for extra resources for the Garda Drugs Squads.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:
“This was obviously a highly successful operation and I congratulate the Gardaí involved.
“The scale of the seizure is a reflection of the scale of the drugs crisis in Ireland and the Government needs to match that with resources for the Garda Drug Squads.
“Gardaí who are fully trained to fight crime need to be taken out from behind their desks and re-deployed into the fight against drugs. This can be done through the civilianisation of administrative Garda duties.
“The general public must also be aware of the scale of the drugs crisis and encouraged to help tackle the problem by using the confidential non Garda phone service Dial to Stop Drug Dealing.
“The sad reality is that the drug dealers arrested this week will quickly be replaced as will the drugs that have been confiscated. It’s time this Government got serious about tackling the drugs crisis with extra resources for both the Gardaí and for education and addiction services to tackle the demand for these drugs.” ENDS
