Doherty congratulates Leaving Cert students

18 August, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education Senator Pearse Doherty has today congratulated Leaving Cert students upon receiving their results. Senator Doherty said the time has come to reflect on how relevant the Leaving Cert is to today and to make progressive changes.

Senator Doherty said:

“I wish to congratulate all students who sat their Leaving Cert this year and received their results.

“The Leaving Cert is a right of passage for many thousands of teenagers. Reports of high levels of stress and health issues related to the taking of this test are unsurprising. In many ways the exam is unfair and is in need of reform.

“Society in the 21st Century needs thinkers and doers. Everyone agrees that Leaving Cert is very much about rote learning with little emphasis on practical tasks and problem solving. I believe that now is the time for us to reflect on how relevant the Leaving Cert is to today and to make progressive changes.

“Congratulations to everyone who received their results today and I wish you all the best for the future.” ENDS
