Increased ATM charge proposal ludicrous – Morgan

3 September, 2010

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has described a proposal from the Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern that there should be an increase in ATM charges in a bid to reduce the number of tiger kidnappings as ludicrous.

Deputy Morgan said:

“This Government has once again shown its affinity for strangling the domestic economy through the imposition of stealth taxes, which will cripple households. Minister Ahern’s recommendation for increasing ATM charges reflects the Government’s disregard and indifference to the day-to-day living of ordinary people.

“People are already paying taxes which contribute to the cost of policing in the State; similarly they are burdened down with the debt of successive bank bailouts. The notion that ATM charges should be increased, further making banking facilities inaccessible and unaffordable for struggling families is ludicrous.

“There is an element of risk to working in a bank and the onus should rest with banks to provide security for employees and cash in transit facilities. Coupled with the Garda Síochána, banks need to review and update their strategies for dealing with tiger raids and robberies.

“This proposal is a severe case of cutting off your nose to spite your face – penalising struggling families in an attempt to deal with crime gangs. Taxing people for the inadequacies of justice policy is excessive, and unjust, and Minsiter Ahern’s proposal should be cast aside to the Government bin of bad ideas, like the tax on commercial vehicles.” ENDS
