Ruane urges Justice Minister to make investigation into Loughinisland murders a key priority
South Down Sinn Féin Assembly Member Caitríona Ruane has written to the North’s Justice Minister, David Forde, MLA, to voice concerns at the perceived inactivity of the PPS in directing upon the file relating to the Loughinisland massacre that was received from the Police Ombudsman in May 2010.
Ms Ruane continued: “The unprecedented arrest earlier this year of a serving police officer accused of criminal allegations of direct involvement in the massacre at Loughinisland in 1994 was seen by many as a breakthrough in the case to bring the killers behind this terrible attack to justice.
“The long investigation into the Loughinisland massacre has understandably proven very difficult for the families who are frustrated at the delays in their search to find the truth. They are entitled to justice in relation to the murder of their loved ones. Justice delayed is justice denied.
“I have now written to David Forde asking for a full update in relation to this case and I have urged him to use his power as Justice Minister to ensure this matter is dealt with as a matter of priority.
“The Loughinisland families and the wider community deserve nothing less.”
