Dubliners shouldn't stand for Labour party selling off city identity

Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Dessie Ellis has described the Labour Party’s proposal to let advertisers to stamp their mark on Dublin parks and playgrounds as “off the wall” and called on Dublin people not to stand for it.

Councillor Ellis said, “To fill the funding gap on Dublin City Council last year the Labour party pushed for the bin charges waiver for vulnerable families to be abolished. They also oversaw cuts in communities and have talking about the cuts that will have to be implemented in this year's budget as well as supporting the introduction of Water Charges on already hard pressed families.

“In both Sinn Fein’s state-wide pre-budget submissions and our contributions to local authorities’ estimates each year, we came up with innovative measures for raise finances and eradicate wasteful spending.

“This Labour idea is off the wall. What companies would they be happy to provide commercial sponsorship? Labour’s Chair of the Finance SPC Cllr Killian Forde has said they should be apt for what they are sponsoring, so for example, sports firms sponsoring playgrounds. Are we to have Nike, which uses child labour in other parts of the world sponsoring playgrounds in Dublin? Who makes the call on whether these companies are ethical companies? And is Dublin, a city awash with cultural and historical heritage to become one big brand name?

“Rather than creating a new glorified Lord Mayor for the City that money along appropriate central government funding and overhauling state public finances, are all areas that councils should be looking at to run budgets not just in the immediate term, but over the course of the next number of years.

“Short-sighted thinking which is all about the sound-bite and not about the consequences, like this Labour ‘idea’ should be rejected by the citizens of this city and we will support them in that.” ENDS
