Taoiseach must reconvene Dáil immediately – Ó Caoláin

7 September, 2010 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has today called on the Taoiseach to reconvene the Dáil immediately to address the banking crisis and the need for an effective strategy to tackle the jobs crisis.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan need to disclose to the Dáil and the public all that occurred at the time of their decision to agree the bank guarantee in September 2008. He said they need to explain why the information they had in their possession regarding the truly catastrophic state of Anglo Irish Bank was not given to the opposition parties at the time of the guarantee.

Speaking at Leinster House today Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

“We are in the worst economic mess in the history of the State and we have a Government which has no mandate for the massive decisions it is taking and which is unaccountable to the Dáil.

“On Monday Finance Minister Brian Lenihan asked EU Competition Minister Joaquin Almunia for permission to extend the banking guarantee. But what about the elected representatives of the Irish people? The Dáil is not due to reconvene until 29 September and the Government is taking these decisions without any reference to the Dáil. It has abandoned democratic accountability.

“The unemployment rate is now almost 14% (13.8) with 455,000 people on the live register in the 26 Counties and there is no real effective jobs strategy from the Government.

“The Taoiseach and his Finance Minister must explain to the Dáil why information regarding the truly catastrophic state of Anglo Irish Bank which they had in their possession at the time of the bank bailout was not given to the opposition parties.

“The revelations about the extent to which the Government misled the Dáil and the public in order to achieve initial support for the bank guarantee vindicate Sinn Féin’s decision to oppose the legislation setting out the terms and conditions of that guarantee.

“I am calling on Brian Cowen to reconvene the Dáil immediately to address the banking crisis and the need for a proper strategy to tackle the jobs crisis.” ENDS
