Minister must intervene now to open Peamount TB unit

2 April, 2004

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin has called on the Minister for Health and Children Micheál Martin to intervene now to re-open the TB unit at Peamount Hospital to patients following the hospital management's refusal to admit a patient with a highly infectious form of the disease. Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

"Peamount management's refusal to admit a patient with a highly infectious form of TB is a disgrace and must now prompt the Minister to intervene directly and ensure that the unit is fully operational again. Staff in the unit have repeatedly pointed out that the running down and planned closure of the unit poses a public health danger given the increasing prevalance of virulent forms of TB. They have been vindicated by this incident. I and other Opposition health spokespersons have called on the Minister to prevent the closure of this unit. He must now act without delay to ensure that the Peamount TB unit continues as a national centre of excellence."ENDS
