Older women have a vital role to play in our society -de Brún

9 September, 2010 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Bairbre de Brún MEP has praised the European Parliament for passing a report calling for changes in the role of women in an ageing society and has said that must now be followed by strong action.

De Brún said, "Europe's population is ageing and we must escape the old prejudices of seeing our older citizens as a burden. Older people have a vital role to play in our society and we must legislate to ensure that this role is protected.

"I am pleased to see this report on protecting the role of older women in society. They are more likely to face problems when seeking employment, healthcare and access to services, and differences in pension entitlements mean they are also more likely than men to live in poverty."

"This report must now lead to strong action to enshrine older women's rights to lead a life of dignity and independence and to participate in social and cultural life."
