Ó Caoláin calls for all party general election leaders’ debate

10 September, 2010 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Dáil Leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has welcomed Enda Kenny’s comments that he would welcome a debate with the leaders of all parties during the next general election.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said all parties in the Dáil must be afforded the opportunity to debate with all their counterparts live on television.

He said:

“My party will not countenance a three way debate between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour with the exclusion of Sinn Féin and the Green Party.

“All parties of the Dáil must be afforded the opportunity to debate with each of the other parties in order to hold each and every party to account and to scrutinise their proposals, policies and manifestos.

“There is little policy difference between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and so a two-way debate between those parties would simply give the impression that there is no alternative on offer. Therefore that option should be off the table immediately.

“It is extremely important that all parties are afforded equal access and that the voters are presented with a balanced view of all options open to them.” ENDS
