Cowen’s comments on Donegal by-election insulting – Doherty
Speaking at his party’s think in meeting in Dublin today Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty described Brian Cowen’s comments, that the Donegal South West by-election will take place sometime in 2011, as an insult to the people of Donegal.
Senator Doherty, who has taken a High Court action against the Government over its failure to hold the by-election said the decision over when the election will take place may not be for the Taoiseach to take.
“The Taoiseach’s comments this morning in relation to the Donegal South West by-election are an insult to the people of Donegal. It is now nearly sixteen months since this seat became vacant and the Government has blocked every attempt to hold a by-election up to now.
“This by-election needs to take place at the earliest opportunity rather than whenever suits Brian Cowen or the Government. In the coming Dáil term I and my party intend to step up the pressure on the Taoiseach and the Government to hold each of the outstanding by-elections.
“One thing that is for sure is that my case will go ahead unless the writ for the election is moved and passed in the Dáil before October 18th.” ENDS
