Carers of children with autism must get necessary help.
Sinn Féin MLA and vice Chair of the Health Committee Michelle O’Neill has stated that the investigative report highlighting huge discrepancies between actual and departmental figures, indicate that carers for children with autism are being failed when it comes to the provision of assistance.
Speaking today Ms O’Neill said:
“The report highlighting huge discrepancies between the amount of carers of children with autism who have applied for assistance compared to actual amount of carers that have indicated, through this report that they need such help, is shocking.
“The fact that most carers indicated that they were unaware of the service is an indictment on the Health department and a failure to meet the needs of carers who require assistance.
“Is it really that hard for the Department of Health to target those who are carers of children with autism or the children's families with an information pack outlining their rights and entitlements?
“There must also now be adequate finances made available to meet the levels of need out there. We cannot have a situation of a proactive approach being adopted to letting people know about what services and assistance exist when monies are not forthcoming to support such schemes.”
