Irish Unity to top agenda at Easter Commemorations in every county in Ireland

2 April, 2004

Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Mary Lou McDonald with party President Gerry Adams MP today launched the party‚s Easter Lily campaign and called on people throughout Ireland to wear a lily and commemorate the men and women of 1916 and all those who died for Irish freedom. On Saturday 10th and Sunday 10th April Easter Commemorations will take place in every county in Ireland with more than 100 individual events taking place.

Speaking outside 16 Moore Street, where the surviving leaders of the Easter Rising were captured and which remains in a derelict state, Mr. Adams said: „It is a matter of concern, however, that the last number of decades have also seen many aspects of our history rewritten, overlooked and abandoned. Number 16 Moore Street is a building of immense historical value. It unwittingly played host to one of the most significant events in Irish history when the surviving leaders of the Easter Rising were captured at the house. Any other country in the world would make this house a national monument. It should be a treasured link with the past and this country's long struggle for independence. I want to support the campaign of Sinn Féin's Dublin City Councillors who are seeking to have it preserved as a museum."

Ms McDonald said:

"This year marks the 88th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and with just over a decade to the 100th anniversary there is a growing debate about Irish unity and independence and the type of Irish society that we, as a people, want to create.

"On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th Easter commemorations will take place in every county in Ireland with more than 100 individual events taking place and preparing for Irish unity will be at the top of the agenda. I am calling on people throughout Ireland to wear an Easter Lily and to make this years Easter Commemorations and events bigger and better than ever before."ENDS
