Doherty calls on Government backbenchers to support by-elections

28 September, 2010 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has called on the Government backbenchers who have been critical of the Government’s refusal to hold by-elections to back up their words with actions this week by supporting the motions put forward by Sinn Féin to move the writs for each of the outstanding by-elections.

Speaking today Senator Doherty said:

“There are a number of Government backbench TDs including Willie O’Dea and Seán Power who are on the public record criticising the Government’s delay in holding the three outstanding by-elections.

“This week they have the opportunity to do something about it. They can back up their words with actions this week by supporting the motions put forward by Sinn Féin to move the writs for each of the outstanding by-elections.

“It’s now time for each of these TDs to put up or shut up.” ENDS
