Public confidence in prison service dealt a severe blow following second erroneous release.

4 October, 2010 - by Raymond McCartney

Sinn Féin MLA (Foyle) and deputy Chair of the Assembly’s Justice Committee Raymond McCartney has stated that, following the news that a second prisoner was released by ‘error’ from Maghaberry prison, is a severe blow to public confidence.

Speaking today Raymond said;

“The news that yet another prisoner has been released ‘by error’ from Maghaberry prison is extremely concerning. This follows the release of a prisoner accused of rape last week who remains at large.

“At this time I pressed the Minister as to what measures would be put in place to ensure there is no repeat of this kind of incident. Yet here we have just days after a repeat of this very serious situation.

“A litany of errors and reports in the prisoner service has affected public confidence and this cannot be allowed to continue.

“I welcome the fact that David Ford has initiated a review and this must be speedy and brought in front of the Assembly as a matter of urgency.” CRÍOCH
