Sinn Féin meet Human Rights Commissioner on Irish Language
Sinn Féin MLA and Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee member Billy Leonard this afternoon joined Barry McElduff MLA and Rosie McCorley in a meeting with Human Rights Commissioner Monica McWilliams.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Leonard said;
“Our meeting comes after the Human Rights Commission informed the DCAL Committee that Culture Minister Nelson McCausland’s stance in relation to an Irish Language Act was not human rights compliant.
A large part of our meeting was seeking to find out what action the HRC could take in relation the Ministers continued stance and in particular his disputing of their inital remarks.
We also sought information on where Nelson McCausland’s position stood in relation to international human rights compliance.
This morning’s meeting was encouraging and we stressed the importance with the HRC that they continue to press both the Irish and British Governments to meet all of their obligations in relation to the Irish Language.
It remains clear and unfortunate that the Minister is choosing to use blocking tactics rather than discharging his legal duties in relation to this matter.” CRÍOCH
