SDLP suggestion on demilitarisation beggars belief

5 April, 2004

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Newry & Armagh Conor Murphy has criticised the SDLP MLA Dominc Bradley's suggestion that decisions concerning demilitarisation should be taken by Hugh Orde and the PSNI.

Mr Murphy said:

"Dominic Bradley's suggestion that decisions concerning demilitarisation should be taken by Hugh Orde and the PSNI beggars belief. Hugh Orde is already on record as saying that he supports the military occupation of areas like South Armagh.

"Demilitarisation is not an option to be decided on by Hugh Orde or his colleagues in Special Branch. It is a central obligation of the peace process. It is the securocrats who Dominic Bradley is now demanding increase their influence over policy who have been central in the ongoing failure to demilitarise the British war machine.

" It is very clear from Dominic Bradley's remarks that the SDLP on the Policing Board are part of the problem. They have increasingly become the defenders of the securocrats within the PSNI and the Special Branch in particular and now they are demanding that their power and influence over policy is increased.
